Most home security advice arrives as a shopping list. A calmer approach is to think about how a burglar, an opportunist or simply a storm-damaged gate would actually meet your home — and to fix the easy routes first.
Think In Layers, Not Devices
Security works in layers: discourage, detect, delay, and respond. Lighting and tidy boundaries discourage. Cameras and sensors detect. Locks, glazing and solid doors delay. Alerts and neighbours respond. A home with a simple, well-placed version of each layer is far better protected than one with a single expensive gadget and a weak gate.
Doors, Windows And Lighting First
- Doors. Solid doors, reinforced strike plates and deadbolts make a real difference. Check hinges are on the inside and frames are sound.
- Windows. Ground floor and rear windows deserve locks or restrictors, particularly those hidden from the street.
- Lighting. Movement-triggered exterior lighting around entries, side paths and outbuildings removes the cover of darkness that intruders rely on.
- Boundaries. Trim shrubs that create hiding places, keep gates shut and make the approach to your front door open and visible.
Cameras And Doorbells That Earn Their Place
Video at the front door, the driveway and any rear access point covers the majority of real situations, including deliveries and unexpected callers. Choose cameras with clear night performance, sensible motion zones, and local or well-protected cloud storage. Avoid aiming cameras into neighbouring windows — good security is a friendly thing to do.
Smart Locks And Who Gets Access
Smart locks and keypads are excellent when someone needs temporary access: a cleaner, a pet sitter, a contractor while you are at work. Set codes for specific people, review who still has access, and keep at least one physical key backup for outages. Change codes when circumstances change rather than waiting for a problem to appear.
Making The System Easy For Everyone
Alarms that nobody can switch off get disabled; apps nobody understands get ignored. When we install a system we set up each household member’s phone, agree on routines, test everything, and leave a simple one-page summary. We also walk through what happens during a power cut, because that is exactly when reassurance matters most.
A quiet evening routine that helps
- Lock exterior doors and set entry alarms as a household habit, not a solo task.
- Keep car keys and valuables away from doors and windows.
- Set exterior lighting on a schedule when you travel.
- Check the app before bed to confirm every sensor is online.
- Review access codes each season and remove anyone who no longer needs them.
